Getting Started With KMS School of Motoring

To start learning to drive with KMS you need to have a valid provisional driving licence; both the photo card and paper counterpart must be shown at your first lesson.

Depending on your level of experience your lessons would usually start on quiet roads with learning the controls of the car and how to deal with junctions, parked cars and other road users.  Everybody learns at a different pace so don’t worry that you’ll be forced to tackle busy roads before you’re ready!  When you start learning with KMS you will be given a booklet where your progress on each aspect of learning to drive will be recorded.  When you reach the stage when you can drive without instruction then you are ready to take your test.

Before you can book your practical test you must first take your theory test.  This consists of 50 multiple choice questions, and the hazard perception part of the test, which contains 14 video clips taken from the driver’s viewpoint, with 15 scored hazards to be identified.  The quicker you

click the mouse to show you have seen the hazard, the higher your score.  Each clip can score between 0 and 5 points.  The pass mark for the multiple choice is 43/50, and for the hazard perception 44/75.  You must pass both parts on the same attempt.  You can take your theory test as soon as you are ready at any time while you are learning to drive.

After this comes the practical test.  You will be required to drive on a variety of roads and in different types of traffic conditions, showing all the skills you have mastered in your lessons.  You will be required to perform 1 ‘manoeuvre’ and possibly an emergency stop.  You will also be asked to demonstrate ‘independent driving’ ie: following a short series of road signs and/or directions from the examiner to reach a particular destination.  To pass you must achieve 15 or less driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

Once you pass your practical test you can take the Pass Plus course which enhances your driving skills to cover motorways and other types of roads and conditions you may not have encountered on your lessons.  This course also can result in lower insurance premiums.

Motorway lessons on their own are also available, and don’t forget if you are a qualified driver and wish to brush up on any aspect of your driving KMS can tailor lessons to suit your needs.
